Pronouncing figures in words.

HI everyone.

Oftentimes I get hard time pronouncing certain figures.
Especially Five figures.
So,  for practice how should one say this in words.
45678
Please, is there any rule to follow in respect of the pronunciation?
Many thanks. .

Re: Pronouncing figures in words.

Hi;

I would say forty five thousand six hundred and seventy eight or forty five thousand six hundred seventy eight.

Re: Pronouncing figures in words.

hi EbenezerSon

The usual mathematical convention is to break the number into groups of three thus

123456789 becomes (one hundred and twenty three) million, (four hundred and fifty six) thousand,  seven hundred and eighty nine.  **

But not everyone sticks totally to this.

For example:  http://english.stackexchange.com/questi … en-hundred

Bob

** brackets added for clarity only

Re: Pronouncing figures in words.

Is it about place value?

How do we go about this: 456789.

Re: Pronouncing figures in words.

Is it about place value?

Yes, that's it exactly.

456789 ............... group in threes ............  (456)(789)              so four hundred and fifty six thousand, seven hundred and eighty nine.

Re: Pronouncing figures in words.

So, should always be grouped in threes?
If then check on this;
4567893. I would  say; four hundred  and fifty six thousand,  seven hundred and eighty nine and three .
Correct?

Re: Pronouncing figures in words.

Correct?

Only if you were paying your taxes or repaying a debt.

That is four million, 5 hundred sixty seven thousand and 8 hundred ninety three.

Why did you start with saying Million?
what rule made you called it "million?"

Re: Pronouncing figures in words.

4567893

The first number on the right is the units or ones digits, the second from the right (9) is the tens digit. Okay, so far?

Re: Pronouncing figures in words.

Grouping in three is fine, I am just showing you where the names of the columns come from.

4567893

The eight is in the hundreds column and the 7 is in the thousands column. Okay?

Let us try something. A guy's power bill is $279. How do you write that in words?

Correct!

place-value-369.svg

That shows the names of the first 3 columns.

Supposing our poor guy owes the bank $7893 on his mortgage, how do you say that?

Correct! The fifth column from the right is the ten-thousands column. A nice Mercedes here costs $67893, want to try that one?
