Lie Groups

There is a thread about Lie groups in the Euler Avenue section of this forum. Here are some questions to complement that discussion. I will write solutions after some has passed.

Re: Lie Groups

Hi;

I can not seem to find this thread. Can you point it out?

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

Re: Lie Groups

It is here: http://www.mathisfunforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=4134

However that thread is missing a lot of information, so I will add my own input to it in future (or perhaps create a new one).

Re: Lie Groups

What is probably necessary is a vid on your site about this. But I did at least learn the proper pronunciation of Lie.

Re: Lie Groups

Okay, but please dummy it down for the dummy. Ole Ben and Ole Ricky ate a topology book with plenty of mustard and sauerkraut.

Re: Lie Groups

Lie groups is a very interesting subject. I am also not a huge fan of topology, but the theory of Lie groups has some very interesting applications. For instance, you can infer some interesting results in particle physics, relating to quarks and the hydrogen atom, by studying representations of the Lie group SU(3).
