Testing For Functions Represented Algebraically
Determine whether the equation represents y
as a function of x.
1. x^2 + y^2 = 4
2. x^2 − y = 9
Equation 1 represents a circle with radius 4.
I say x^2 + y^2 = 4 does not represent y as a function of x.
A circle is not a function because it fails the vertical line test.
You say?
Equation 2 can be manipulated by solving for y. By doing so,
the equation represents y as a function of x.
