Re: Given the opportunity...

Of course... Not a doubt, why wouldn't I? Since I don't believe in any form of life after death, I'd be happy to live forever.

Re: Given the opportunity...

Absolutely not - life would get boring, then it would get really boring, then it would get so boring it'd make me stressed, and it'd be no fun. The thought of existing forever in an afterlife makes me uncumfortable, I prefer to think that when we die, we just die, and that's it.

Re: Given the opportunity...

My first inclination is to say no but it really depends on some other things.   Am I staying in good physical and mental health or am I going to spend eternity in a nursing home (I'd chose hell first!)?    And how about my family and friends?   Are they living forever or are they dying at a normal age?

Re: Given the opportunity...

I think living forever is a great idea! Yes there would be periods of boredom, but the brain is always chucking out old memories, so I could re-read books in a 100 years and they would seem like new!

However, what if I got some permanent painful illness and couldn't die?

So, forever with an exit clause please.

Re: Given the opportunity...

I agree with Dross. Living for a very long time is fine, but I wouldn't want to live forever. No matter what you do, if you live forever then there will eventually come a time when you have done everything so many times that everything is boring. Being bored is especially boring, which compounds the problem to no end.

And if we're getting really hypothetical, then eventually the universe would either collapse in on itself and kill everything, or expand out so much that everything is very very far away from everything else and everything is also really cold and therefore lifeless (apart from maybe bacteria-type). I certainly wouldn't want to be around in either of those situations.

Fun fact: Many scientists believe that the first person that will reach an age of 200 is alive today.

Re: Given the opportunity...

I would live for as long as humanity existed.

Re: Given the opportunity...

But as long as you were living, you would exist, meaning humanity still existed, meaning you would keep living, meaning you would keep existing, meaning... etc.

It's a circle of perpetuality.

Re: Given the opportunity...

Hmmm, I guess 'forever' is a very unrealistic concept. By living forever I meant having your conciousness intact in one way or another forever.
I have no idea how this might work if the Big Crunch Theory is correct, and how you would be able to maintain conciousness when compressed into a singularity.

I guess you have to create a hypothetical universe where the Big Freeze Theory is correct, and that you somehow are invincible to everything including the infinite gravity of a black hole and the cold of the big freeze...

Oh, why do you have to analyse my question so thoroughly >_<

Re: Given the opportunity...

Ok, here's what.
Everytime you wander into a black-hole or get crushed by a meteorite or fall off a skyscraper or die of chocolate poisoning you respawn at a respawn point like in games! big_smile
And for the question's sake, let's say the universe's cosmology just stays exactly the same it is today forever, with a spherical shape so that it is impossible to reach the end of the universe

Re: Given the opportunity...

if you lived forever you would become infinitely intelligent....rrright?

Well, I don't really believe in life after death, but rather reincarnation (im not a buddhist) and the recycling of fundamental elements. I would probably volunteer to live forever.

Do you really consider me humanity?  Wow, thanks for the complement.

Seriously though, humanity isn't one person.  Humanity is the interactions of entire cultures and even across cultures between many many different people.  One person will never make humanity.

Re: Given the opportunity...

I'd be like the Highlander, an Immortal! Only death by decapitation. I'd be able to spend my time researching everything, knowing things and then being totally superior. I'd also learn how to wield a sword properly and battle against my enemy Immortals. THERE CAN ON~LY BE ONE!

Boy let me tell you what:
I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.
