Since 7 8 9, then just use 8 + 8, which is 16.  Cool huh.

But the question makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

What exactly does 'if 7 8 9' mean if this was not actually a riddle? Some form of a sequence or progression? This could actually go deeper than we thought. 16 is the first obvious answer that must (yes, it must) spring to mind. Maybe there is something else behind it?
