If someone could explain how this is done, I would really appreciate it!

Definitions would be a good place to start. Let
Whats the definition of trace(A)? Its the sum of the diagonal elements.
Whats the definition of |A|? Why, thats the ubiquitous determinant.
And whats the definition of the characteristic polynomial of A? Well, its the determinant of xI−A, where I is the identity 2×2 matrix.
Now put all these definitions together and, hey presto! You should have the required formula.
