I really don't get how you work out ratio . Could anyone please explain it to me? I would very much appreciate it as it comes up in my end of year exam. Thank you!!

Well, what year are you in?
Here is a good page for Ratio.
Let's say that I shared a £10-pound note (or $10, whatever) with my friend in the ratio 6:4 (not fair ). To work out who gets what amount, we add the two numbers together to get a total. In this case, the ratio is 6:4, so we do 6+4 = 10. So now we know that I get [sup]6[/sup]/[sub]10[/sub] of the money, and my friend gets the rest ([sup]4[/sup]/[sub]10[/sub] of the money). 6/10 or 10 is 6, right? So I get £6 (or $6), and my friend gets the rest, £4 (or $4).
Understand?

Okay, I'll help.
When you work with ratios, remember they are similar to fractions, but off by ONE.
So don't get the answer off by one.
Like 3 to 1 is one quarter.
Or 1 to 3 is one quarter.
See how 3 plus 1 is 4, for the quarter.
Don't be fooled into 3 to 1 is one third.
Now the colon in 3:1 is said as "3 to 1".
Take a family with 4 kids.
2 girls, and 2 boys.
The ratio is 2:2, which is read, "2 to 2".
Now 2 out of 4 are girls and 2 out of 4 are boys.
So 2 to 2, sort of like playing a game and the score
is 2 to 2.
Now suppose an apple pie is cut into six pieces with
three cuts thru the center, which looks like six cuts
stemming outward when you are done.
If one piece of pie put on a plate, then there are 5
left on the pie.
So the fraction 5/6, read "5 sixths", of the pie is left.
But the ratio of moved pieces of pie to unmoved pieces is 1 to 5, written "1:5".
Don't write "1:6", because it is "1:5".
Bye.
