Which one is easier to learn (total beginner) Matlab or Mathematica?

Hi guys, I have to do a Conic Sections work for college, using one of these two languages.
Which one is easier to (learn to) use, or at least which should I pick up for this geometry subject?

Thx in advance

I haven't done any geometry in either so regarding this aspect, I am uncertain.  However in almost every case I prefer mathematica over matlab.

"In the real world, this would be a problem.  But in mathematics, we can just define a place where this problem doesn't exist.  So we'll go ahead and do that now..."

Octave, similar to Matlab and free of charge.

X'(y-Xβ)=0
