Edexcel Further Maths Course

Hey friends,

Just a quick question about my Edexcel course. Basically in school I'm only going regular Maths A Level. But I really want to persue it further by learning the Further Maths course myself, for fun. Maybe if I'm good enough take an exam in it.

So the question really is, at this moment does anyone know any good books prefrably endorced by Edexcel, for FP1 and M2. With enough explanation that I can learn by myself. Hopefully someone has read a good book, and can suggest it to me.

I'm planning to do this with the heinemann modular series, and use the internet to supplement anything I'm not satisfied with

I've heard Further Pure Mathematics by Bostock and Chandler is pretty good.

I'm doing the exact same thing right now - got my final exams coming up in a few weeks!

I just used the Heinemann books together with another couple of books entitled Further Pure Mathematics (by Brian Gaulter) and Further Pure Mechanics (by Brian Jefferson). These two cover most material in the pure and mechanics modules, and are useful for a couple of chapters that the Heinemann books fail to explain very well. On the whole though I've found the Heinemann books to be pretty good. The key to passing the exams is to do lots of past papers.

If you're planning on doing maths, physics or engineering at uni then i'd definitely recommend doing further maths. I've done up to M5 in mechanics and am so much better prepared going into a physics degree next year. The physics and maths a-levels alone are pretty pitiful!

Hey yeah I too have heard the Heinemann books don't explain stuff very well, and and reluctant to buy them. I was looking into

Thats seems pretty good, and is endorced by edexcel.

Ive only done M1 so far. What did you use to learn the rest?

The book mentioned above seems very good.... just taken it out of the library

For AS Maths ive done C1 C2 and S1, next year i will do C3 C4 and M1, and then im doing an AS in Further Maths by myself and think i'll do FP1 FP2 and M2, although im already struggling on Chapter Two of FP1!

As im doing Physics, do you reckon its better if i did most of the Mechanics Modules?

The mechanics you'll do in maths is much harder than the mechanics you'll meet in physics.

naaaah, mechanics is physics is way harder, and the questions are twisted in ways that are difficult to expect, applying all sorts of physics mumbo jumbo. in math mechanics, the values are directly given, and theyre in chronological order so you cn expect which method to use, just dpending on whther u've studied em or not, less confusion ^___^.

in my opinion anyways. whee~
