Help with adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying fractions!

Hi.
I get really stressed out when it comes to fractions. Some times it gets so bad that i start crying and i try not to but i can't help it.
Fractions was probably the hardest subject9and it still is) that i have ever ever tried to do! It's so frustrating and i tell myself, "don't start crying, you will just embarrass yourself, just ask the teacher for help, and take deep breaths." i do, but it doesn't really work. sad My previous math teacher was sooo nice! She encouraged me and helped me whenever i needed it and she was so caring and kind. smile She took so much effort into teaching me plus others! But still after that, fractions seem to still be a problem. I had a small test today(it was for my new math teacher to look at so she knew where i was in math so she could help) and it was fairly easy, except for when those fractions came up....as soon as i saw them, i said to myself, "it's fine! Just get through them! If you get them wrong, then the teacher will know that i need help with them." and so i started trying to add them and everything. But the very first one stumped me!

Re: Help with adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying fractions!

5 in the top and 10 in the bottom.
5+5 in the top and 10+10 in the bottom.
That's 10 in the top and 20 in the bottom.
Now keep adding 5 to the top and keep adding 10 to the bottom.
5+5+5 in the top and 10+10+10 in the bottom.
That is 15 in the top and 30 in the bottom.
And 1+1+1+1+1 in the top is 5.
And 2+2+2+2+2 in the bottom is 10.
So 1+1+1 in the top is 3.
And 2+2+2 in the bottom is 6.
And all these things I'm
talking about are just
different ways to talk
out HaLf,
that's right, a HAlf,
yup, a haLF.
A half is 2 out of 4
or 3 out of 6,
or 5 out of 10
or 1 out of 2
Those are all the same thing.

Re: Help with adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying fractions!

77horses,

If you want a tutorial on fractions, and to check the line by line math work, take a look at my calculator here:

Fractions

It handles the adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of fractions, both proper and improper, as well as mixed numbers.

Let me know if I can be of any more help.

it takes time to understand two seperate issues of fraction

1. Fraction with same denominator
You need to pratice this first

2. Fraction with different denominator
As far as you understand the first then move on with this

Email me we can chat over yahoo if you can. My email [snip]
