solve the following equation by completing the square:

9x^2 + 3x - 8 = 0

divide by 9
9/9 = 1
3/9 = 1/3
8/9 = 8/9
x^2 + (1/3)x - (8/9) = 0
add 8/9
x^2 + (1/3)x = (8/9)
(1/3)/2 = 1/6
(1/6)^2 = 1/36
add 1/36 both sides
x^2 + (1/3)x + (1/36) = (8/9) + (1/36)
( x + (1/6))^2 = (8/9) + (1/36)
(x + (1/6))^2 = (8/9) + (1/36) = 32/36 + 1/36 = 33/36 = 11/12
(x + (1/6))^2 = 11/12
x^2 + (1/6))^2 = 11/12
x^2 + 1/6^2 = 11/12
x^2 + 1/36 = 11/12
11/12 - 1/36 = 8/9
x^2 = 8/9

Yup thats the exact answer i got last night when i was doing it.
but i did it a different way.
i wrote
1 2 3 4 5
and paired it up
like
12
34
45
42
41
and etc.....and there are only 10ways i got
thanks btw

for problems like these
graph the following function by determining the region of interest:
y = x^3 - 2x + 1

and
given the function, y = 2x^3 - 3x + 2, find the y- intercept and sketch its graph.

i can use this site:
http://www.coolmath.com/graphit/index.html

and just put
x^3 ....... and it'll show me how to graph it

right?

solve
7^(2x + 3) = 5^(3x - 1)

so

log7^(2x + 3) = log5^3x - 1)
(2x + 3) log7 = (3x - 1) log5
(2x + 3) (0.84509804) = (3x - 1) (0.698970004)
1.69019608x + 2.53529412 = 2.096910012x - 0.698970004
-0.406713932x = -3.234264124
x = 7.952184249
or
x = 8.0

#43 Re: Help Me ! » Triangle » 2006-12-21 08:24:33

ok guys i dont know...
can you show me what you might think will be the way in solving the problem?

#44 Re: Help Me ! » Triangle » 2006-12-21 08:14:26

ok in my book  they have the exact same question but offcourse with different numbers.
now i dont understand if we have such as in the book they have 0.5=cos x
and they said x = 60 degrees , 300 degrees and then they said x is less than 90 degrees so x = 60 degrees

how can i find the degrees of my problem?

#45 Re: Help Me ! » Triangle » 2006-12-21 05:22:15

can you help me out please?!

#46 Re: Help Me ! » Triangle » 2006-12-21 05:21:12

oh god yeha..i forgot to put 11........thanks for reminding me

#47 Re: Help Me ! » Triangle » 2006-12-21 04:56:02

well i dont know...thats how they did it in the book

#48 Re: Help Me ! » A - B » 2006-12-21 04:34:00

and i think the way you did it is has to be

2 2
2 0
not
2 0
2 2
so the answer would come out to
0  -3
0  -2

right?

#49 Re: Help Me ! » A - B » 2006-12-21 04:23:30

oh right this is the way ..thanks
but like is said

_      _  _    _
| 2 2  |  | 2 5  |
|  2 0 |  | 2 2  |

you see that there is a line on the five and there are lines liek this _ in teh problem what do they mean? nothing?

                      11

I did .. but i need your help!

p^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab cos P
8^2 = 10^2 + 11^2 - 2 (10)(11) cos X
64 = 100 + 121 - 220 cos X
64 = 221 - 220 - cos X
221 - 64 = 157
157 = 220 cos X
0.7 = cos X
how many degrees is that?

and i know i have ot do this when i find teh degrees .....
to find y

8/sin(x) = 11/sin y

sin y = 11sin(x)/8

sin y = ________
and how much degrees is that?
